Barry by Lynn Hall5/30/2023 ![]() This edition of the book has new illustrations, rather than the originals found in the "Garrard Publishers" first edition. It became a tradition afterwards to name the finest dog Barry so that there would always be one. However it tells an exciting and sweet story of the remarkable Saint Bernard dogs housed at a monastery of the same name, and the monks who devoted themselves to rescuing people in the Alps. Obviously, the characters, and perhaps this particular Barry are composites. This is a wonderful true story for early chapter book readers. Amsterdam condensed ian mcewan5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() The sound of the name, Molly Lane, somehow recalls Molly Bloom. The ex-lower was a kind of femme fatale cliché of the XX century. Two middle-aged guys are attending an ex-lover’s funeral. And there is Vernon with his feeling of non-existence, which is a postmodernist moment, for he certainly does not exist until someone reads the novel. We are worried that Clive will end up just like Molly. We are in the characters’ heads, thinking their thoughts, afraid of their fears. McEwan is a master of the free indirect style. There is no bare sarcasm, only the finest irony, essential to characterization and plot. ![]() Instead, we, the readers, are encouraged to take the protagonists seriously. The narrative instance doesn’t criticize and doesn’t even laugh at those characters. But the way McEwan deals with it, the approach, the focuses - it is all so fresh (even now, in 2015) and remarkable. Amsterdam by Ian McEwan certainly isn’t the first novel in the history of literature that deals with moral hypocrisy in a corrupted society, nor is the last. ![]()

This is the story of the castrati, the exquisite and otherworldly sopranos whose graceful bodies and glorious voices win the adulation of royal courts and grand opera houses throughout Europe. In a sweeping saga of music and vengeance, the acclaimed author of The Vampire Chronicles draws readers into eighteenth-century Italy, bringing to life the decadence beneath the shimmering surface of Venice, the wild frivolity of Naples, and the magnetic terror of its shadow, Vesuvius. ![]()

The Whitby Witches by Robin Jarvis5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve often thought of this book being most fitted to TV adaptation with 1990s techniques, but since that can never be, I’ll take today’s digital effects if it means bringing the awesome power of Hilda’s staff to life.Īs with any Robin Jarvis finale there’s going to be a lot of myth and a lot of sacrifice, and the ending of The Whitby Witches surpasses expectations on both fronts. The finale sequence, with Mrs Cooper cackling and Whitby flashing through the ages and our heroes in deadly peril, makes a fantastic case for a Whitby Witches television miniseries. It’s certainly one of my favourite of Mr Jarvis’ finales, and, along with Deathscent and the entire Wyrd Museum Trilogy, showcases his love for history in a way that is amazingly cinematic and exuberant. This final chapter was as vivid on cassette as it is in book form, if a little pared down. Like the ending of The Final Reckoning, it is positively apocalyptic in its proportions, and when all is said and done, it feels like our heroes have really faced the worst that Rowena and the Lords of the Deep could throw at them. ![]() This is really interesting, because the ending does read like an honest-to-goodness series finale. ‘Armies shall fall before me and nations tremble at the mention of my name.’Īufwader’s Thoughts: Matt mentioned during the ‘Up Next’ post for this book that when it first came out there was no indication that it was part of a trilogy. ![]()

The coven by harper l woods5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() This book was one of the most frustrating reading experiences of recent memory for me. If the ghosts of Hollow’s Groves’ victims don’t kill them first. Thirteen promising students destined to change the world. No one talks about the bloody massacre that forced it to close decades prior, only the opportunity it can afford to those fortunate enough to attend.īecause for the first time in fifty years, the Coven will open its wards to the Thirteen. The only animosity I face comes from the beautiful and infuriating Headmaster, Alaric Grayson Thorne, a man who despises me just as much as I loathe him and everything he stands for.īut that doesn’t mean secrets don’t threaten to tear the school in two. No condemnation for the blood that flows through my veins. My duty forces me to the secret town of Crystal Hollow and the prestigious Hollow’s Grove University-where the best and brightest of my kind learn to practice their magic free from human judgment. ![]() Raised to be my father’s weapon against the Coven that took away his sister and his birthright, I would do anything to protect my younger brother from suffering the same fate. ![]()

We own this city fenton5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() And that is one of its strengths: the dismal context in which the task force roamed and terrorized, and the forces that fueled their mission. The book tells us not only about police officers, but of the city in which they operate. It’s a story made for the screen, and it’s heading there, thanks to Simon, a mentor of Fenton’s. Along the way, they lied to their bosses and evaded oversight for years. Members stole drugs and money from suspects, planted evidence to drum up phony charges and engaged in deadly car chases. Instead, from the moment of its founding, the task force was a “supergroup” of bad cops. ![]() ![]() Justin Fenton, Baltimore Sun reporter and author of “We Own This City.” Justin Fenton, Baltimore Sun reporter and author of “We Own This City.”įenton’s first book, “We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption,” published in February by Random House, tells the story of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force, an elite unit designed to get weapons off the streets. ![]() |
