Midnight in peking by paul french5/28/2023 ![]() Unusually, though, she spoke fluent Mandarin. Pamela had been an ordinary expatriate schoolgirl, something of a loner, but keen on ice-skating and listening to big bands on the radio. The victim was Pamela Werner, daughter of ETC Werner, well-known in the British community as a former consul and academic sinologist. ![]() All the blood had been drained from her body and in a particularly gruesome detail, her heart was missing, ripped out through her broken rib cage. On the morning of 8 January 1937, the body of a 19-year-old girl was found at the foot of the Fox Tower in Beijing. As with the death of Heywood, the circumstances were deeply suspicious. The mixture of high politics, elite lifestyle and murder, all in the setting of a rapidly changing China, has caught the attention of millions of newspaper readers around the world, who couldn't have found Bo's city of Chongqing on a map three months ago.Īnother murder involving a Briton in China attracted popular attention three-quarters of a century ago. If the rumours being floated by the Chinese authorities are to be believed, Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, plotted to have Neil Heywood, a British businessman, killed and may even have paid thugs to force him to drink poison. ![]() T he scandal surrounding the former Chinese Politburo high flyer Bo Xilai has turned from political intrigue to something much more sinister. ![]()

Travels in Senegal by Terry Lister5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() As often as possible Terry travels using local transportation and these included mini vans, sept-place cars (7-seater cars) and motorbikes. ![]() It was also frustrating to hear of the poverty in some of the countries while Terry discovered how much governments spent on a handful of prestigious buildings. I was also interested in how many Africans who came back after slavery was abolished, chose to live as ‘masters’ themselves and built houses similar to the mansions of the deep American South. Some of the slave trade history was hard to read about, but there were lessons here for us all. ![]() I know very little about Africa and Terry fills that knowledge with his historical and economic findings. An experienced solo traveler, Terry’s book is sprinkled with photos of his trip. Having read and enjoyed the first book in the series I was very happy to return to Africa under Terry’s guidance. In this book Terry travels alone through Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Ghana. A New Day Dawns is the second book in the Travels with Terry, a series of travelogues from West Africa. ![]()

Madam Secretary by Stephanie Dray5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() To underscore the rejection of the traditional finery of monarchs, Lucy Knox chose a suit of brown broadcloth for George Washington to wear at his inauguration. After the war, these founding mothers wrote the rule book on etiquette for a young republic. Here are the women entrepreneurs, writers and activists of our fight for independence. “It’s safe to say that most of the men who wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, fought the Revolution, and formed the government couldn’t have done it without the women.” So begins “Founding Mothers,” Cokie Roberts’s entertaining exploration of the lives of well-known patriots like Abigail Adams and Martha Washington, as well as more obscure women of valor such as Sybil Ludington, Deborah Sampson and Elizabeth Freeman. ![]() Photo: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Founding Mothersġ. ![]()

I originally put this page up a year or so ago, but took it down almost immediately, and before linking to it from anywhere, having decided that the almost universally critical nature of the review was inappropriate given that there was actually quite a lot that I very much appreciated in this book. ![]() ![]() It consists of a partial review, a three-tiered summary, a set of questions raised by the book, and a couple of possibilities for essay topics based on the book. I am generally not conservative, but was sent a copy of the book by a friend who encouraged me to study it, which I did to some extent. Weaver is a classic in the conservative tradition.
